Video forensics is a relatively new field in most parts of the world. It mainly involves scrutinizing video clips for clues using softwares to enhance, refine or correct shots that are blurry or unclear. This process helps uncover details that were not visible due to the low quality of the video. Video forensic investigators takes recorded video and enhance it to a point where detailed faces of people and car license plates, street names, landmarks and other details can be seen.

The original video is often blurred or underexposed and forensic experts use editing tools to convert the blurry videos to a clear format that makes it eligible to be used as courtroom evidence. Each tool is for different purposes and each step involves various processes.  Some steps taken to uncover details on a video includes:

  1. Video Stabilization
  2. Panaroma Mosaic Resonstruction
  3. Denoise
  4. Motion Deblur
  5. Demultiplexing

Each step helps filter, enhance and reconstruct videos and turn them into good evidence. However, do remember to keep the original tape. You wouldn’t want to be accused of changing or purposely erasing the tapes or question the data’s authenticity.

Warlock has just got himself a new toy…a video recorder and is busy learning all the new techniques in this latest gadget. He’s a fan of gadgets and keep buying new ones. *grumble*  he’ll be engrossed and forget the rest of us for awhile.
